Sri Lanka women vs Bangladesh women (SL-W vs BAN-W) match at Navi Mumbai turned into a stunning thriller. Sri Lanka pulled off a narrow seven-run win after Bangladesh collapsed in the final overs of their chase.
Bangladesh, chasing 203, were on track to win until the last nine balls. They lost five wickets in those nine deliveries, turning a sure victory into heartbreak.
Bangladesh Collapse in Final Over
Chamari Athapaththu, Sri Lanka’s captain, turned the match around with a magical spell. She took three wickets in the final over and ended with figures of 4 for 42.
Bangladesh, who needed just a few runs, lost four wickets in four balls — including a run-out — in that same over.
Nigar Sultana, who led the chase with a calm 77 off 98 balls, looked set to guide her team home. But after her dismissal, the team crumbled. Her partnerships with Sharmin Akhter (64*) and Shorna Akter had earlier kept Bangladesh in control.
Sri Lanka’s Batting Led by Hasini Perera
Earlier, Sri Lanka scored 202 runs, thanks to Hasini Perera’s brilliant 85 off 99 balls. It was her first ODI half-century and earned her the Player of the Match award.
Athapaththu supported well with 46, while Nilakshika Silva added 37. However, after reaching 172 for 4, Sri Lanka collapsed, losing their last six wickets for just 28 runs.
Shorna Akter was Bangladesh’s best bowler with 3 for 27, while Rabeya Khatun and Shorna also struck at key moments.
Drama and Luck in the Middle Overs
Sri Lanka’s innings had its share of drama. Kavisha Dilhari was dismissed in a rare way — her shot bounced off the pitch, hit the wicketkeeper Nigar Sultana, and rolled into the stumps while her back foot was in the air. The Smart Replay System confirmed the stumping.
Udeshika Prabodhani and Sugandika Kumari later helped restrict Bangladesh with tight spells. Their disciplined bowling in the last few overs set the stage for Athapaththu’s heroics.
Bangladesh’s Missed Chances
Bangladesh fielders missed several run-outs and stumpings. Still, they reviewed well and controlled most of the chase. But their slow scoring rate hurt them in the end.
Even with Fargana Hoque and Sharmin Akhter holding the innings together, they could not rotate strike or keep up with the run rate.
Sri Lanka Keep Their Hopes Alive
With this win, Sri Lanka women (SLW vs BANW) stay alive in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025. Bangladesh are now out of semi-final contention.
The match proved that Athapaththu’s leadership and Sri Lanka’s never-give-up attitude can turn any game around.
